SONY PD-150P

Sony PD-150

In business image is everything effective communication requires sharp focus and uncompromising professionalism. Your message needs to be clearly expressed – and Sony has the solution. The DSR-PD150P digital camcorder was developed for business use and designed to professional specifications. From college campus to large-scale enterprises, the rush is on to leverage the power of the “new media” – because there’s no time to lose.

The DSR-PD150P combines the latest technology: DVCAM record and playback, state-of-the-art 1/3-inch CCDs, PC-based editing, professional sound and built-in special effects. Add to that surprising ease of operation at an unexpectedly low cost – and seamless compatibility with a host of other Sony products – and your multimedia, video-streaming or documentary-style messages are a lot closer to realisation than you would have thought possible.

Time-code settings enhance efficiency. Because you can set time codes either in “record run” or “free run” you can use these codes to identify tapes – and specific locations on them – during editing. This enhances editing efficiency and reduces editing costs. An index can also be marked while recording through the camera or from an external video source.

Professional audio sound … without additional equipment. Two XLR input connectors enable you to use professional microphones and achieve top-quality audio reproduction. In addition, because the DSR-PD150P allows you to set the levels of the two channels separately, you don’t need to purchase an external device to achieve professional audio recording.

Clearer focus during recording. You will optimise your image clarity and capture a sharper, more focused picture with the DSR-PD150P’s high-resolution black-and-white viewfinder. Of course, you can always adjust the colour balances in post-production editing, but clear definition cannot be corrected for after the taping has been done.

Multi-mode recording. You can switch the DSR-PD150P from DVCAM to DV recording mode to extend recording time.

Manual adjustments to get the best shot.Because the perfect shot often requires you to exercise your artistic judgement, the DSR-PD150P allows you to manually adjust various functions such as zoom, focus, iris, shutter speed, white balance, filters, backlight, digital effects and more.

Added functionality with Memory Stick™.Extend your visual repertoire with a Memory Stick, which provides you with a wide range of added functions such as Memory Photo, Memory Mix, Memory Chromakey, Memory Luminancekey, Camera Chromakey, and Memory Overlap. All of these enable you to achieve special effects on the fly.

No more “camera shake”.Unlike many other camcorders, the DSR-PD150P does not use digital processing to correct for camera shake, because this technique can create digital noise. Instead, by detecting vertical and horizontal movements independently, the DSR-PD150P’s prism system compensates optically for the unsteadiness.

LCD monitor lets you check as you go.You can use the high-resolution LCD colour monitor to view the image as it records – or to check the playback picture on location. It also makes setting menus and audio recording levels easier and is convenient for monitoring the action while the camera is mounted on a tripod.

Compatibility with related products. When you buy a DSR-PD150P camcorder you’re assured of seamless compatibility with Sony’s related professional products, such as other camcorders, digital VCRs, the ES-3 Editing Station and the DSR-V10P video walkman. It means that connection and playback problems are eliminated allowing you to concentrate on the story and not the kit.

Features

Time-code pre-set
A unique feature of time-code settings on the DSR-PD150P is that they can be used to uniquely identify tapes. Time-code mode can be set to “record run” or “free run”.

Professional audio input
The DSR-PD150P has two XLR audio input connectors, which provide balanced connection to a range of professional microphones and other pro-audio signals.

Independent audio control
The DSR-PD150P features two audio channels, which can be set separately.

Newly developed 1/3-inch CCDs
The DSR-PD150P incorporates three 1/3-inch CCDs with 450,000 pixels (effective 400,000 pixels). The 1/3-inch size contributes to high sensitivity, improves the signal-to-noise ratio and reduces smear levels. The optical system supports a 58-mm lens with 12x zoom.

Optical Super SteadyShot™
The DSR-PD150P employs the Super SteadyShot to detect the horizontal and vertical movements separately. The prism system located in the front of the lens adjusts and optically compensates for any unsteadiness.

Choice of five fading modes
The DSR-PD150P offers a choice of five fading modes: black fade (in/out), monotone fade (fade from monochrome to colour), overlap, wipe and dot.

Titles saved in memory function
When using a cassette with Cassette Memory, titles can be set and recorded in memory. The titles are therefore not superimposed on the video signal even though they are displayed during playback.

Digital programme editing
Using an i-LINK™ interface, the DSR-PD150P can be connected to a Sony VCR to edit tape. The camcorder controls the VCR, and the accuracy of editing is within five frames.

InfoLITHIUM battery system
The InfoLITHIUM battery system incorporates an IC chip, which transmits a reading of the remaining capacity of the battery to the DSR-PD150P.

Automatic battery charging
The DSR-PD150P automatically recharges when the supplied AC-L10 cord is connected. The remaining recording time is displayed on an LCD on the camcorder.

Memory Stick and protection features
The supplied 4MB Memory Stick lets you store up to 60 VGA images (with progressive scan mode) and use them to create various special effects. Because these functions are password-protected, Memory Stick works as a key to camcorder operation and therefore protects against theft.

Precision monochrome viewfinder
The DSR-PD150P is equipped with an 180,000-dot LCD black-and-white viewfinder, which provides 500 lines of horizontal resolution – more than 20 percent higher than equivalent colour viewfinders. Consequently, you can compose your picture with the utmost clarity – while you can always rely on post-production editing if colour-balance adjustments are necessary.

LCD colour monitor
The DSR-PD150P features a fold-out, tilting colour monitor that allows you to check recording quality, confirm playback on location, and conveniently set levels using the on-screen menu.

FAQ

Is DV (SP) recording possible on the DSR-PD150P?
Yes. Please note: Since the recording head is optimised during DVCAM recording, in very rare cases the transition between cuts is not very smooth on the DV (SP) recording mode.

Why is the DV (SP) recording required?
DVCAM is the right solution for professional AV production. However, sometimes DV recording is useful for distribution, in terms of the number of installed products considering the domestic range of products. Another reason is that, simply, DV recording allows longer recording time than DVCAM. Although DVCAM is a more robust format, DV is useful for emergency long recording if the available number of cassettes is limited.

How is it possible to have a higher resolution specification using less CCD pixels, when compared with the DCR-VX1000E?
The number of the CCD pixels is one of the important factors that define the resolution specification. Although there are less pixels, the resolution specification is improved thanks to the higher lens quality and signal processing. The number of horizontal pixels of this CCD is the same as the number of the DV format's horizontal pixels. Additionally, the operation clock is the same in camera signal processing and VTR signal processing.

Is the lens exchangeable?
No. However, the lens quality and its functionality, such as Focus Ring, Zoom Ring, and Iris Dial have been significantly improved.

What is the benefit of XLR input?
It means that any type of professional microphone, which has a XLR connector, can be used

What are the maximum operating hours?
Approximately one hour with the NP-F330 (supplied with the camera), or around 8 hours with the NP-F960.

Is there a wide-angle conversion lens available, like the DSR-PD100AP?
Both a wide-angle conversion lens (VCL-HG0758) and a tele-conversion lens (VCL-HG1758) are available from Sony Consumer Products sales.
